This is a silly but very good lesson that I learned last week.
My internet was down for the past 6 days. Because I run an internet-based business it’s obviously very important to have strong internet.
The week began with several missed appointments from the cable provider, and eventually lead to getting new cables and a new modem installed.
Once all the new equipment was installed, it just took several short hours for my internet to stop working.
No less than 6 calls and 7 days later was a cable technician able to come back out to look at the issue.
After spending 5 minutes evaluating the situation, inspecting the new cables and modem, the technician, who spoke very little English, fixed the problem. He simply pushed the button.
The new modem was still in standby position!!! ALL that needed to happen was to simply push the button. Doooh!
After all the time I wasted waiting on hold, working with virtual technicians, and waiting for technicians to come and fix the issue, the actual fix was so simple that I could have done it!
Push the button.
Get the modem off of Standby and into action mode. I was dumbfounded by how simple the solution was. And the nice technician laughed and smiled and said have a good day.
Not one to let an experience pass me by, I started asking some questions (feel free to apply these to yourself):
1. Where else am I making things difficult? Do I assume the issue is complicated when really it’s a simple fix?
2. What areas do I need to look at the obvious solutions?
3. What areas do I need to move from standby mode to “on” mode?
4. Are there easier faster ways or shortcuts? Is it good enough? Or do I really need to overhaul it all?
I’d love to hear your feedback and comments on when you moved from standby to on by simply pushing the button.
